Art and Ecology: Sustainability through Creative Expression

The topic of sustainable development in Florida has always been a priority for the Travel to Art editorial team. This is why we nominated the young artist Kateryna Doronina for the The Best Artist Award. In her work, Kateryna explores the themes of ecology and environmental preservation.

How and when did you start to explore sustainability in your work?
I started looking into this theme about a year ago when I noticed how pollution was affecting the coastlines that inspire me. This made me think about ways to combine art and environmental responsibility.

Do you think that art can change society’s attitude towards environmental issues?
Art has the power to evoke strong emotions and encourage reflection. It helps us see problems and their consequences, inspiring us to change.

Do you have any examples of projects created in collaboration with environmental organizations or activists?
Yes, my work Waves of Change was created in collaboration with volunteers who participated in beach clean-ups in Florida.

Do you use recycled or eco-materials in your work? If so, why are they important to you?
Yes, I do use recycled materials like plastic. This helps to reinforce the environmental message of the work and shows how waste can be rethought and put to good use.

Could you share your list of locations/places in Florida that communicate environmental awareness through contemporary art?
If you’re looking for places in Florida that combine contemporary art with environmentalism, I can think of a few. The Pérez Museum of Art in Miami is one of them. Its exhibitions often focus on ecology. The museum is known for its Bayfront Gardens, which support local nature. ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale is another great option. It’s an art space that supports projects at the intersection of art and ecology. It hosts exhibitions and initiatives aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues.
